My friend Ethan and I headed out for a day hike not far from Bangor to get some nice sunshine and views before we had to head to work at the Lucerne Inn. This fit perfectly into our schedule! The trail head is about a 45 minute drive from Bangor, Maine in the Donnell Pond Public Reserved Land. We did the Black Mountain Cliffs Trail, the trail head is at the Schoodic Beach Parking Lot. Black Mountain is in Hancock County and it’s a great hike in Maine for beginners
From mainetrailfinder.com – Schoodic Beach Trailhead: Shortly after entering the Public Lands, bear left at a fork in the road and follow the Schoodic Beach Road for 2.3 miles to its end and the Schoodic Beach parking area. (Note: Google mistakenly labels the Schoodic Beach Road as the Donnell Pond Road in the map above.)
It’s a great day hike with some nice vistas. Bring a picnic and a smile! It’s a great hike for beginners, or for those with dogs or kids. It’s an easy hike with great views! A slow ascent with a lot of large boulders but the top is reached pretty easily.
The trail sits between the scenic water bodies of Donnell Pond and Tunk Lake. Open ledges provide attractive vistas across the 15,000 – acre Donnell Pond Public Lands and beyond. You will have some nice views and some great table land!!
